Re: vCenter License:

Can I use vCenter license twice for TestBed Infrastructure

Hi,

I have two separate environments in my company, Production and Testbed. I have licensed ESXi hosts and vCenter Server in production and also licensed ESXi in testbed infrastructure. I have no license for vCenter in Testbed.

The question is, does vmware allows to use a vCenter license in Testbed infrastructure, this vCenter license is already in use in production infrastructure. If yes, please provide the link for the license usage policy by vCenter.

Thank you

Trigger SLM Application from CALLUPDATEIA Stored Procedure

$

Hi,

We use the CALLUPDATEIA Stored Procedure to assign values to some fields when logging Calls via incoming email.

It seems like the SLM rules are run/applied before CALLUPDATEIA is executed, so when the Organisation field is set via the SPROC, the corresponding SLA isn't applied to the Call until an Officer takes action on it.

Does anyone know if it is possible to invoke the SLM application functionality from a Stored Procedure?

Many thanks in advance,

Al.

The most likely culprit is an incorrect guestOS parameter in the vmx file.  Regardless, you can manually mount the appropriate VMware Tools installation CD.

Using the toolbar icon while your VM is running, change the CD-ROM contents... browse to the Workstation folder, find the "Windows.iso" file and select it.  Then right-click the CD icon again and choose "connect".  If your guest has auto-run enabled, the tools setup should launch.  If not, manually launch the setup from the CD in the guest.

My hero!  I've been spinning my wheels with SHA256 cert in a new View 7.0.2 installation and had not installed the cert as exportable at first.  After removing and reinstalling it as exportable it's now working.  Beers are on me.

Ivo,

I don't think this is the problem because I modified a sample to do the same thing as Cathy and it works for me.

"Automated backups will not be performed until it is reconnected with vCenter Server."

This indicates your host is disconnected from vCenter. This is likely also the reason that you cannot log in with Windows credentials as Identity Sources for single sign-on are usually defined in vCenter.

vCenter is the central system (either Windows-based or an appliance) that manages the VMware environment. You are connecting to the ESXi host using vSphere Client by the sounds of it, vSphere Client is not vCenter.

Is the original vCenter server instance available?

Best backup solution for 4 separate ESXi hosts with one vSphere?

Currently we have 4 separate ESXI 6 servers (Dual XEON, 128GB RAM, 12TB RAID, 1Gbit LAN) with 8-10 virtual machines running on each, having about 5TB of free space. All servers are connected to one vShpere virtual server, located on the one of those 4 ESXi servers. We need a backup solution which would provide us with the following possibilities: 1) Full (daily inceremntal) back up of every virtual machine, so if one of our ESXi hosts fails we can continue our work in 20-30 minutes. 2) If any of our virtual machines fails, we can revert to 1-7 days backup. 3) During daily backups VM should countinue to run without noticebale performance impact. Better if backups could run at night (but without stopping VM's). AFAIK VMware offers 2 possible solutions: VSphere Replication & vSphere Data Protection. Which one suits our needs better? What if host with vsphere server & VR or VDP appliance failes? Is it possible to have 2 vsphere servers & 2 appliance servers? Thank you in advance for comments.

I am not sure how to answer... I'll google how to check if an instance is available, but not sure right now. Now, I can login to the ESX from the console, and my login works there, just not from my management server with the vSphere client. Does that help? Would a service account or something be locked on the ESXi?

Moved It or Copied It when accessing same VM from different OSs?

I'm accessing the same VM from two different installations of OS X (10.11 and 10.12) on the same Mac. Each time I boot into the other system, I am asked by Fusion if I moved or copied the VM. Why, and which alternative should I choose?

ESXi host upgrade using VUM quits after 22% and host becomes unresponsive

$

Hi all, i'm in the process of upgrading my site and just recently i came across two hosts that after 22% complete in the upgrade process stops responding to pings. I log in to the console of the ESXi host that is in question and i can see it has been upgraded and sitting as if it was fine, but can't ping at all and the process is stuck at 22% or 23%.

I am upgrading from ESXi 5.1 to ESXi 6.0 using VUM 6.0. i have been able to upgrade about 20 so far with no issues but these last two are having problems. I have tried the following

1. remove the host from domain membership

2. remove host from cluster

3. try upgrade from vCenter directly

I will continue to look for more information but i don't know what else to try at this point.

Regards.

Re: can't consolidate disk

I think you said you use Veeam?    I have had veeam cause this scenario.     Look to see if there is a drive mounted to your veeam guest / server via edit settings on the veeam guest itself.   If so note the path of the hard disk,   If so, you would need to get rid of that disk to clear the consolidate error.

Veeam,  but that licensing will be expensive.   I think there are direct competitors to Veeam, less expensive these days.   The advantage of Veeam or products that provide the same functionality is not only backups, but you get real replications that are ready to run in case of failure.   These days you just add an ISCSI box for storage and you are ready to roll with veeam.    Lots of cheap iSCSI software out there these days.   We use a product by Kernsafe, rips performance wise with 10Gig ethernet and cheap SSD based raids.   But works well with 1gig pipes and mechanical drives also.  The Veeam guest can be replicated as well so you don't loose your backup guest,   Replicates efficiently off-site as well if you have a host(s) in any remote locations.

Best of luck,   let us know what you implement.

But what about VSphere Replication or vSphere Data Protection? They are free in case you have standard license?

Re: vROPS Horizon Desktop Agent and WmiPrvSE.exe high cpu

We're experiencing this same issue in our Horizon 7.0.1 / vSphere 6.0 U2 / vRops 6.2 / V4V 6.3 environment today. It's being made even worse by the fact that the WMIprvSE.exe is tripping up our AV on-access scanner and causing our AV agent to consume another 50% of the CPU on top of the usage by WMIprvSE.exe. I'll follow-up if VMware support has a fix or not.

Fusion 8.5 & Linux kernel 4.8 heads up

$

Hi. I'm an Ubuntu developer who is using Fusion 8.5 on OS X 10.11.6.  I generally operate by taking disk snapshots before apt dist-upgrading (especially when a new kernel or graphics stack is involved), and it's saved my butt many times in the past.  When I encounter a problem, I can roll back and bisect the package set until I narrow down exactly which deb or debs broke my machine.  This has been extremely helpful in ensuring that the current development version of Ubuntu is solid for our users.  I always run the latest in-dev version of Ubuntu.  Our QA system does a generally great job of making most dist-upgrades work perfectly, but occasionally something slips through, and that's where Fusion really shines.

In any case, as Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) is nearing completion, and kernel freeze is *today*, with the help of our kernel team, I've been chasing a bug where the system either does not completely boot, or boots but does not give you a functional desktop (although in the latter case, ssh still works).  We've done a ton of bisects (using snapshots from a known good image) to narrow down the commit or kernel config option causing the problem, and I thought I'd relate this to you in case you notice something similar --or are a VMware developer .  FTR, I am not a kernel developer.

The bug in question: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1627198

Specifically, enabling CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY_PAGESPAN will cause the problem.  My understanding is that this option catches copies from userspace with cross page boundaries, and some Fusion driver is doing just that.  Disabling this config produced a 4.8 kernel that boots Ubuntu and proceeds to a useable desktop upon login.

Re: Workstation 12.5.0 crash 0xC0000374 (heap corruption) in VMX

I can't speak for the other users here who are having the crash problem with a Win10 build 1607 disk, but so far I've had numerous (but irregular) heap corruption events on a standard 12.5 host.  I have *not* seen any problems (despite making several runs) wben the virtual machine is configured to either (a) run in full debug mode, or (b) run USB ports at USB2 specs.

One question: given that the VMware folk are consistently asking for .DMP files, and my system (at least; how about others?) has never created one...is there a reason why no dump file is showing up?  Is there a parameter somewhere that needs to be set to allow it to be created?  Or, since it's VMWARE-VMX.EXE that's failing does that also terminate the thread that should be creating the dump?

Joe
