Simple & Low Cost BackUp & Data Recovery ?
Hi,
Our setup:
4 VMWare hosts
1 Vcenter
VMWare esxcli = 5.1 or 5.5
VCenter = 5.5
We have Essentials Plus License
Maybe around 60 VMs spread out among the 3-4 VMWare hosts. All VMs running Linux (All Linux no Windows). All VMs are running open source front end web applications, Cache, Elastic Search (NO Mail Apps, Oracle or any Database apps or Corporate Apps).
What is a good low cost Data Backup and Recovery Solution that is simple to set up and requires no downtime on the VMWare hosts (no reboots if possible)? Checking out the Unitrends and VEEAM paid solutions but their licensing seem cost prohibitive for us.
Goal would be to take a nightly snapshots (keep like 3 - 7 days back) of VMWare host esxcli and VMs that are running and be able to restore from a backup in the event of hardware issue like a drive failure etc.

Yes. The problem for me was that I was using the internal IP of the vCD server. vCD services do listen on that interface so I ended up having to use the IP/Hostname for the interface on the DMZ

I have performed several esxtop tests while streaming media therefore keeping VM busy to see if this stress will translate into anything.

For VM backup just use the VDP that is already included with Essentials Plus, see: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2016565
And for vSphere configuration, just keep a configuration documentation and in case of physical hardware crash you can bring a host back in less than 30 minutes, including host configuration.

Adobe Creative Cloud *Specifically photoshop
Hi,
App Volume version 2.12
Launching Photoshop 2017 version takes around 27-30 seconds through appstack
Photoshop is set as default which is setting 70% memory on side,
increasing VM memory to 16 doesn't make difference
Test VM configuration
2 Virtual Socket and 2 Number of cores per socket
8 GB memory
C drive 22 GB free of 49 GB ( i don't if this makes any difference or not since appstack is on seperate disk)
VM version 10
Appstack attachment is only 2 appstack one that includes adobe suite and another one with general applications (size 2 GB)
Any clue on how to make launch and working through faster for photoshop?

Parallel Port Redirection Error
I am trying to extend the life of a DOS application that works fine on Windows XP. It was running on an older PC that had a built in parallel port which worked for printing. Now that old PC died and only Windows 64 bit machines are available. I created a Windows XP virtual machine that runs on this machine in VMWare Player 12.5 and the host PC has a parallel port card on LPT3. I configured the VM settings to redirect the parallel port to the file "LPT3" and the DOS application in the VM prints perfectly to the printed attached Host PC... for a while.
They don't use this app often so I just had them suspending the VM and resuming it when this app is needed which worked great several times. Now sometimes it works and sometimes when trying to print VMWare pops up the error message: Parallel:Unable to write to the file "LPT3" over and over and printing no longer works. We somehow got this working again after several reboots of the VM and the host. I don't even know what actually fixed it and it worked for a while again. It's in this state where it doesn't print again today and I really was hoping to find either an easy way to fix this when it happens, or better a way to prevent it from getting in this state.
Any suggestions?

Thank you for your advice. What you are proposing totally make sense and I can agree.
Yes, I have ruled out VMtools and installed latest tools back on the VM, as step one.
I have also temporarily rolled back vCPUs to 4 cores which was original settings.
I have a few quick questions regarding my screenshot below:
1 Regarding CPU/MMU there are Hardware CPU, Software MMU vs. Hardware CPU and MMU. Which one?
2 Regarding CPU, according to this screen shot, I can only change top pull down menu showing 4. The Cores per Sockets pull down is greyed out and is not available to me despite Hot add is being enabled. Please advise why and how to properly increase CPU to 12 cores based on the screen shot below?

Yes, if you disable full resolution for Retina display option you will lose 'pixel to pixel' match inside virtual machine so it looks less sharp.
Besides, I'm wondering what about if you use 'Default for display' in your Macbook pro 2016 host machine and enable Retina support for virtual machine? Does it help?
The resolution get doubled in virtual machine is intended behaviour due to Retina support.

This is the expected behavior, since vCenter 6.5 is compatible only with vSphere ESXi hosts version 5.5 and later, see: VMware Product Interoperability Matrices
The newest vCenter server version that supports vSphere ESXi 5.0 hosts are the vCenter 6.0 Update 2, see: VMware Product Interoperability Matrices

VMFS volume missing physical extents
Hi Folks, I'm getting error as below while trying to extend VMFS volume. I can see in properties that total LUN size and extents size doesn't tally.
Also I can see the extend in add datastore wizard. I tried reboot/rescan, nothing helps. I don't want to complicate it further as it contains VMs and data.
Also from cli I can see extent LUN is showing offline but PATHs are active.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Single CPU socket vSAN? Approved?
Hi,
I'm experienced with ESX, new to vSAN and investigating specs - any comments warmly welcomed with thanks:
None of the official "vSAN Ready" all flash specs (AF-4/6/8) allow for a single CPU socket board. In fact the only one that does is the hybrid HY-2
This makes things difficult if trying to go for an FTT=2 solution - budget is holding us down at 4 dual-CPU nodes, when 6+ Single-CPU nodes would be nicer (servers can be specc'd for 4 able to manage full workload instead of just 2).
Is it possible to come up with an all-flash single cpu system that is guaranteed to function well? Have I missed something just concentrating on the AF-4/6/8 and HY-2/4/6/8 specs?
